|Bern's Steak House |
1208 S Howard Ave
Tampa, FL 33606
Restaurant Description: Arguably, the best fine dining restaurant in Tampa, Bern's
epitomizes elegance from its decor to its service to its cuisine. Guests
get a sense of the restaurant's opulence immediately upon entering the
lobby, a two-story space thick with marble, velvet and gold trim. The
100-seat dining area continues the theme, though in somewhat more
subdued fashion, with rich mahogany paneling and exquisite chandeliers.
When it comes to Bern's menu, too, no detail is too small to ensure a
world-class dining experience: They age their own steaks, grow their own
organic vegetables, mill their own bread grains and hand-sort their
607 Clearwater Largo Rd S
Largo, FL 33770
Restaurant Description: When a son took over an old favorite from his folks, locals
figured he'd upgrade a bit and carry on as usual. No way -- Grillmarks
is all new, inside and out, with an innovative menu and a classy
L.A.-bistro feel. Sun-drenched colors, dark mahogany tables, glossy
polished floors and upbeat lighting welcome a new young and hip crowd,
as well as loyal regulars.
2117 E. Seventh Ave.
Tampa, FL 33605
Restaurant Description: Everything old is new again at the timeless Columbia
Restaurant, founded in 1905 as an eatery for cigar makers. Now covering
a square block, the restaurant is Florida's oldest culinary tribute to
Cuban delights. Elaborate wrought iron grills, archways and palm trees
set a Latin mood. If you're around during the lunchtime hours, order a
juicy Cuban sandwich. Regulars return for tempting tapas, ranging from
Cuban caviar (black beans) to skewered shrimp a la plancha.
6200 Courtney Campbell Causeway
Tampa, FL 33606
Restaurant Description: Come ready to throw down the ducats: Armani's is not for
the pedestrian of taste or the faint of wallet. This luxe spot refuses
to compromise its menu or its attitude. Expect northern Italian cuisine
such as filet mignon stuffed with Gorgonzola cheese and black ravioli
with lobster. The ever-changing menu is responsive to the seasons and
selections are always representative of what is freshest right now.
4342 W. Boyscout Blvd.
Tampa, FL 33607
Restaurant Description: Founded by Roy Yamaguchi in East Honolulu, this chain now has a
Tampa presence. It's located across the street from the city's newest luxury
shopping complex, International Plaza, and the restaurant brings a Hawaiian
theme and promotes an "aloha" style of service. Chef-partner Rand Packer,
formerly of Roy's Maui venue, is in charge of the Tampa kitchen. The
restaurant features open dining areas, an expansive lounge with a community
table, a covered outdoor patio and an exhibition kitchen.
Dish Bay Walk
197 2nd Ave N
St Petersburg, FL 33701
Restaurant Description: This trendy choose-your-own-food chain has a lot going for it
-- primarily a large grill heated to 425 degrees in the center of the
restaurant. There are lots of windows with a view of downtown streets, plain
panes mixed with brightly colored ones. Techno and rock music pulses
overhead and sunburst sculptures hang from the ceiling. It all suggests a
quick meal, which is fine. This dish is ideally located in the city's new
BayWalk entertainment complex, complete with a 20-screen multi-plex.
Bella's Italian Café
1413 S. Howard Avenue
Tampa, FL 33606
Restaurant Description: As a member of Restaurant Row's 'upscale casual' club, Bella's
has the requisite decor and furnishings -- the earth toned walls, hand-blown
table lamps, wood accents and sleek exhibition kitchen -- as well as the
hip, in-the-know waitstaff required for membership. Yet despite the seeming
predictability of it all, this trendy ristorante manages to set itself
Tampa Palm Restaurant
205 Westshore Plz
Tampa, FL 33609
Restaurant Description: The original Palm opened on Manhattan's 2nd Avenue in 1926. The
owners wanted to name it the 'Parma' in honor of their native hometown in
Italy. However, when applying for their business license, it was mistaken
for the 'Palm' due to their thick Italian accents. Since the owners had
little money for decorating, local artists were encouraged to draw cartoons
on the walls in exchange for their dinner. Now one of the Palm's trademarks,
every location has caricatures of local personalities adorning its
232 N. Dale Mabry Hwy.
Tampa, FL 33609
Restaurant Description: Wrap yourself in the glamour and romance of a more elegant time
and place. At Donatello, imagine you're dining on the Grand Canal in Venice.
Stucco arches, golden tiles and flattering peach lighting comply with the
illusion here, where you can savor classic dishes simply prepared with the
freshest ingredients. Locals and visitors, couples and business execs hasten
to Donatello for that special touch. Every female diner receives a rose.
Mise en Place
442 W. Kennedy Blvd.
Tampa Bay, FL 33606
Restaurant Description: Casual but elegant is a great trick if you can pull it off. The
owners of Mise en Place have pulled it off with great elan. On any given
afternoon, you'll find an eclectic crowd of ladies who lunch and corporate
bigwigs closing deals. All this buzzing takes place at both the restaurant's
cafe-style tables and at its dark-wood bar.
